My dear Arka,

Your sweet note is just to hand. Heartiest congratulation on your brilliant success in the Madhyamik Pariksha. All of us expected such a brilliant performance from you. My parents are all praise for you. They have asked me to congratulate you on their behalf. Scoring 95% marks in the Madhyamik with five letters marks is a splendid achievement. It is the reward of your hard labour. We have every reason to expect such a brilliant result from you in the HS too. We hope your sincerity, devotion and seriousness will take you a long way. Your performance will inspire the students of average merit like me. Anyway, what course are you going to take next? I invite you to visit our place. Don’t forget to bring a handi of sweets when you will come.

We all look forward to meeting you soon. With best wishes to you and best regards to uncle and aunt.

Your loving friend,

Sanjana

  1. Write a letter to your friend inviting him / her to spend a few days with you in the Puja vacation in the countryside.

My dear Arijit,

Your sweet note has just anchored the shore of my heart. I am happy to know that your Puja vacation is going to commence very soon. I would like to give you a proposal to spend a week with us in the countryside during the Puja days. After a long confinement in the city, you will really feel relaxing in the countryside. Moreover, the joys of Puja in the countryside are altogether different from those of the city. The beating of drums that accompanies Durga Puja in the village is something that you are sure to miss in the city. Then the immersion ceremony on the day of Dashami will surely please you. Besides, the rural environment will refresh your mind and restore your energy. Above all, my parents will be very glad to have you among us. So I invite you to come here. Don’t say no. We’ll have a great time here. Please inform me when you will come.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon. With best wishes to you and best regards to uncle and aunti.

Your loving friend,

Sanjukta

  1. Write a letter to your friend inviting him / her to attend your birthday party.

My dear Abir,

I hope this will find you quite safe and sound. Here’s a good news for you. My fifteen birthday has fallen on15th instant. My parents have arranged for a dinner party on the occasion. Many of our friends and relations have been invited to it. Amal, Aloke, Ajay, Arka, Arijit, Swapna, Arkasuta, Sramana, Somashree have all agreed to attend the party. But it will be incomplete without you. So I invite you to attend the party. Arka has promised to bring his mouth-organ and Aloke his piano. So we’ll have a great musical hungama. Sramana has agreed to bring her Sony Handicam. So we’ll take some snapshots too. In a word, it will be a great get-together. So I request you to attend the party positively. Do come I tell again. Don’t say no. No more for the time being.

Tender my best compliments to uncle and aunti. With best wishes to you and love to Tapu.

Your loving friend,

Samiran

  1. Write a letter to your friend accepting his / her invitation.

My dear Samiran,

Your sweet note has just kissed my hands. Thank you very much for your invitation. I am very glad to know that you have invited me to attend your fifteenth birthday party. I have long wished to visit your place. So it’s a golden opportunity for me to pay a visit to your place. Besides, it will be a great get-together as you have said. I don’t want to miss the chance of feeling the joy of togetherness. I have already approached my parents for their kind consent. And it’s a matter of great pleasure that they have happily consented to send me to your place on the eventful day. So practically, there is no bar to my attending your birthday party. I am positively attending your birthday party to enjoy the great hungama there. No more today. More when we meet next.

Tender my best compliments to uncle and aunt. With best wishes to you and love to Tukai.

Your loving friend,

Abir

  1. Write a letter to your friend declining his / her invitation.

My dear Samiran,

Your sweet note has just kissed my hands. Thank you very much for your invitation. I am very glad to learn that you have invited me to attend your fifteenth birthday party. But bad luck for me, I cannot attend your birthday party. My father is out of station. He is away on a piece of urgent business for an indefinite period of time. On the other hand, my mother is seriously ill and almost bed-ridden. There is none to look after her except me. So I have to look after her round the clock. God knows when she will come round. So it is practically impossible on my part to comply with your invitation. Hope you would not misuderstand me. Happy birthday to you. Many happy returns of the day. I am parcelling you a gift. Please acknowledge its receipt.

Tender my best compliments to uncle and aunt. With best wishes to you and love to Tukai.

Your loving friend,

Abir

  1. Write a letter to your friend consoling him / her for his / her failure in the examination.

My dear Samir,

The news of your failure came to me like a bolt from the blue. You never got plucked in any examination before. However, past is past. Don’t brood over the matter. Failures are the pillars of success, you know well. Please keep in mind that examination is a chance and result depends on luck in many cases. Even the meritorious students sometimes cut a sorry figure in the examination. Do you know that Keshab Chandra Nag, the great mathematician, cut a sorry figure in the examination once? Be optimistic in the days to come and success will be yours. Try and you will succeed. I think you have not forgotten the story of Robert Bruce who succeeded in regaining his kingdom even after his six consecutive defeats in the hands of his enemies. So be up and doing from today with an oath to succeed and you will surely come out successful with flying colours.

With best wishes to you and best regards to uncle and aunt.

Your loving friend,

Ankur

  1. Write a letter of condolence consoling your bereaved friend who has recently lost his / her father /mother.

My dear Arpan,

Words can hardly give vent to the rude shock the news of your mother’s death gave me. It came to me like a bolt from the blue. I cannot believe my ears till now. It is so sudden and yet so real. The other day I found her quite hale and hearty. Her sad demise is an immeasurable personal loss to me. She was to me like my own mother. I cannot forget her filial love and affection for me. Still it is inevitable and common to all. May God keep her soul rest in eternal peace. Words of consolation will fall flat to you, I know. I am only thinking of your father who loved her with all his heart. I request you not to brood over your personal bereavement. Time will change everything. Please take heart to go ahead. I’ll meet you soon. No more today. More when we meet.

With best wishes to you and best regards to uncle.

Your loving friend,

Asit

  1. Write a letter to your friend inviting him to your village during the summer vacation.

My dear Asit,

I have just received your letter. It is a great pleasure that your summer vacation has just started. Come here to my village-house at Gopalnagar. The charms and the attractions of the village will make you spell-bound. The twittering of small birds will awake you in the morning. You can wander about here and there in the meadows, riverside, groves or orchards. You will be physically exhausted, I know. But the gentle breeze of the south will soothe your tired nerves. Moreover, summer is ready with its baskets full of its seasonal fruits like mangoes, jack-fruits, lichis, watermelons etc. The delicious fragrance of ripe mangoes and jack-fruits will, I am sure, water your mouth. In the afternoon the songs of the home-bound birds will regale your ears. Above all, the sailing cloudlets lit by the setting sun will be a feast to your eyes. Hope you will not fail to respond to the enchanting call of bountifulness of nature in the village. No more for the time being. More when we meet next.

Looking forward to your early reply. With best wishes to you and best regards to uncle and aunt.

Your loving friend,

Anjan

  1. Write a letter to your friend expressing your sympathy for his / her illness.

My dear Ajay,

I am shocked to learn that you are now laid in a hospital bed with an attack of malaria and have lost all hopes in life. Don’t be so much depressed and frustrated about your life, my friend. For, malaria is a curable disease. Proper and sustained treatment will heal you up. So why are you losing heart? Please strictly follow the advice of the doctors and you will recover soon. It’s just a matter of time, you know. So there is nothing to worry. Don’t be anxious about your studies right at this moment. Even if you fail to sit for the First Unit Test, you will be able to avail yourself of the Remedial Test at the end of the Second Unit Test. So don’t worry.

Expecting your speedy recovery.

Yours ever,

Asit

  1. Write a letter to your friend describing a street accident you have witnessed.

My dear Ajay,

With a heavy heart I write to you about a horrible street accident that I witnessed today on my way back home from school. I was walking along the footpath by the Jessore Road. A superfast bus of route No. DN 44 was turning right to get entry into Chandpara Bus Stand at Chandpara. It took its turn at a break-neck speed. Just at that time a young motor-cyclist was knocked down by the wheel of the bus. The driver used the brake to stop the bus. But before he could stop the bus, it ran over the motor-cyclist who died on the spot. The local people rushed to the spot and started to manhandle the driver. Later the police came to the spot. The situation was brought under control with the arrival of the police. No more for the time being. More when we meet next.

With lots of love,

Yours ever,

Asit

  1. Write a letter to your friend describing a picnic you have enjoyed.

My dear Amit,

You will be glad to learn that last Sunday I went to a picnic. The spot was Bibhuti Smriti Ghat at Barrackpur, Sreepalli. My parents, my younger sister Tanu and I myself made the team. We went for marketing the day before. We hired an autu-rickshaw to reach the spot. The menu was simple – Biriyani, fish fry, chilly chicken, sweets and ice-cream. I and my younger sister Tanu helped mother in cooking. During cooking we enjoyed Rabindrasangeet from our CD player. After the cooking was over, Tanu recited from Tagore and Nazrul. Then we had our delicious lunch. After lunch we strolled about on the bank of the river Ichhamati. Gentle breeze was playing through the boughs and scattered stray leaves on the gliding stream below.  We took some snapshots. We also enjoyed boating on the Ichamati. It was really a romantic experience. No more today.

With best wishes to you and best regards to your parents.

Yours ever,

Asit

  1. Write a letter to your friend telling him /her how you planned to spend your days after your final examination(M.P). [M.P – 2006]

My dear Gopal,

My Madhyamik Examination will be over soon. I hope I’ll do well in the examination. In your last letter you wanted to know how I would like to spend my days after the examination. Here it is.

After the examination, I’ll get at least three months’ break. I’ll be free from the monotonous routine of studies, homework, school and coaching. I have decided to go to spend in my native village for a week. Returning from there, I shall not idle away my time and get bored. I have thought of doing a short course on computer and attending classes on spoken English. I’ll relax the rest period with my favourite hobby – Gardening. Thus I would like to utilise my break.

How do you like the idea? Please drop me a few lines about your opinion by return of post.

With love and good wishes.

Yours ever,

Asit

But I have got very poor marks in Mathematics. You know very well that I am weak in Math. However, I am trying my level best to improve my performance in the subject. I hope I’ll do better in the next Unit Test. I am sending my progress report by post for your signature. I am well and I am getting on well with my studies. No more now.

My heart-felt love to you and mother.

But you know very well that I am weak in Mathematics. So I am facing a little trouble with Math. However, I am trying my level best to cover up my deficiency in the subject. My teahers are also helping me a lot. Whenever I face any problem, they guide me with their valuable advice. So I am confident that I’ll do better in the final exam. So don’t worry. I am well.

My heart-felt love to you and father.

My dear Apu,

Hope this will find you quite safe and sound. I have come to know from your last letter that you are very much afraid of learning English. Even after great effort in the subject, you find it difficult to improve. I am here with a collection of tips for your help. Please attend English classes regularly and listen to what the teachers read out. Read the text book carfully. Prepare homework daily and get it checked by your teachers. Take the habit of reading daily newspapers and story books. Use an Advanced Learners’ Dictionary by Hornby. Pay special attention to sentence construction, spelling and pronunciation whenever you read English. These and a few other tips will, I think, go a long way in helping you in improving English. No more today.

My heart-felt love to you.

Your loving brother,

My dear Apu,

I am really worried to learn from mother that you are spending much time on sports neglecting your studies. Don’t forgot that your first and foremost duty as a student is to study. This does not at all mean that I ask you not to take part in sports. In fact, I advise you to make a balance between studies and games. Your final examination is ahead. I expect good result from you that will ensure you a good career. But without hard work, no success is possible, you know very well. So I shall ask you to study hard in real interest without further delay to shine in life. No more for the time being. Don’t forget to send the report of your progress in the final exam.

With love and good wishes.

Yours affectionately,

Elder brother

7 May,2010

My dear father,

I have just received your letter. You have wanted to know about my progress in studies in view of the examination which is knocking at the door. I can assure you that I have already made satisfactory progress in my studies. I hope I will secure more than 75% marks in each subject. But as I am weak in English, the subject is giving me a lot of trouble. I think I badly need a tutor to overcome the problems that I am facing in English. If you can send Rs. 200/- more per month, I shall be able to engage an English tutor for me. However, I am trying my best to do a brilliant result. So don’t worry. I know success will be mine.

With love to mother and best regard to you.

27 May,2010

My dear father,

The result of first Unit Test has just been out. I have secured an average of 77% marks in every subject. But I have not at all done well in Mathematics. I have got only 55 in it. It is a very poor mark indeed at par with the marks in other subjects. I have already approached the teachers of Mathematics of my school for their valuable advice. They have advised me to practise from Test Papers by ABTA and Objective Mathematics by Jana & Mitra. So as the cost of the two books, I badly need Rs. 200/- now. Please remit me the amount by money order as early as possible. I hope everyone at home is in good health.

With love to mother and best regard to you.

Yours affectionately,

Apu

March  27, 2010

My dear Rajan,

I received your letter in time. Thank you very much for your encouragement and best wishes for my examination. Now that my examination is over, I feel more relaxed. In your letter you wanted to know about my English Examination. Let me tell you about it.

Our English teaching and learning process has undergone a thorough change in 2001. Last year the English question on the new curriculum has been introduced in the Madhyamik Examination. Anyway, there are three sections in our English question paper. The first section is called Reading Comprehension (Seen & Unseen), the second one is called Grammar and Vocabulary and the third section is called Writing. Of all these I like Reading Comprehension and Grammar and Vocabulary sections. I find Writing section a little difficult. In this examination I have fared well in the first two sections as I expected but I could not do so well in the third section. However, the question paper was neither too difficult nor too easy.

How was your examination? Do drop me a few lines by return of post. Awaiting your reply. With lots of love.

May  21, 2010

My dear Ratan,

It seems ages since I saw you last. But still I feel you by my side to share every moment of my life.

Last Sunday, I believe, I came across one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. Frankly speaking, it was the saddest day in my life. We, some friends, went to the Ichamati to bathe. Our friend Ajay was with us. We were all moving to and fro in neck-deep water. Suddenly Ajay lost hold of himself and was carried away by the high-tide. He did not know how to swim. He was drowning. Some boys standing on the river-bank were shouting, “Help! Help! Ajay was drowning.” A fisherman fishing in a boat nearby at once dived into the river and after half an hour’s search picked up Ajay’s body, still and lifeless. The demon of death snatched him away. His parents went mad when the news reached them. We lost one of our best friends for ever. The incident remains still fresh and lively in my memory. This was the unforgottable incident in my life. Here’s so much.

Hope you will be sad as much as I am after reading the letter. With lots of love and best wishes.

Yours  ever,

Sukanta

May  21, 2010

My dear Rahul,

Your sweet note is just to hand. I am glad that you have enjoyed yourself very much in the ‘Poushmela’ of Santiniketan.

I have never been to Santiniketan. But once I went to ‘Pir Gorachander Mela’, a fair held at Deganga in the North 24 Parganas in honour of a Muslim saint. My father took me there. The fair ground is located on the bank of the Vidyadhari centring a holy mosque. This fair is important for its spirit of religious tolerance and integrity.  People from both Hindu and Muslim communities have been taking part in it for centuries. It is also famous for folk singers who assemble here during the fair. I enjoyed my visit to the fair very much. The usual shops in the fair and the huge crowd were also interesting. Before coming back home, I ate very tasteful hot ‘Jilipi’ to my heart’s content.

I take leave here. With lots of love and best wishes.

Yours  ever,

Sukanta

No news from you for a long time. Perhaps you are busy with your studies. So I am. Only two months are left before the Madhyamik Examination. My preparations are almost complete. My dear Rahul,

You will be glad to learn that we had had a grand time at the Alipore Zoo last Sunday. To get entry, we stood in a long queue and collected tickets. First we saw a huge multi-coloured migratory birds chirping and flying here and there in the cage and in the large tank. We saw monkeys, apes, peacocks, zebras, deer, giraffes, camels, leopards and many other animals. We fed bananas, vetch, nut and biscuits to some animals. Next we went a hippopotamus in a shallow pond. We had a great fun to see a chimpanjee smoking a cigarette sitting on a chair. The roar of the lions in the cages made us afraid. Finally the Royal Bengal Tigers walking up and down and roaring in the cages captivated all of us. It was a great experience indeed. It is still fresh in my memory.

No more for the time being. More when we meet next.

With lots of love.

Dear Rabi Uncle,

Thank you very much for the birthday gift you have sent to me. I am very glad at the choice you have made for me. It is my long-coveted book – ‘Call Of The Wild’ by Jack London. As I am an animal lover, it is the fittest gift from your end. The book deals with the loving bond between an animal and human beings. But how had you come to know my secret wish! Oh, really! You are the best uncle in the world and this is my best birthday gift.

With best regards to you and aunti,

Yours affectionately,
